NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.—Sarah Lawrence College women's crew began its spring season with two days of competition. On April 11, the Gryphons squared off against Iona College in a dual race. Then, on April 12, SLC rowed in the 2014 Metropolitan Intercollegiate Rowing Association Spring Championship Regatta.
Friday's race saw the Gryphons take on a pair of Iona boats in a varsity 4+ dual race. While the Gaels ultimately succeeded, the Green and White boat was able to challenge in the first quarter of the race.
On Saturday, SLC fielded two boats in the Spring MIRA Championships. First in the water, the Gryphon varsity 4+ took on a challenging field, including three Division I programs. The heat was won by Fairfield University, while Sarah Lawrence reached the finish in sixth place (10:28).
In the team's second race, the novice 4+ hit the water in a four-way race, needing a third-place finish to qualify for the afternoon final. While SLC kept pace early, the Gryphons were eventually edged by less than a second, finishing fourth in the heat (10:47).
Sarah Lawrence returns to the water on April 19, when the Gryphons are expected to field a varsity 4+ in the Kerr Cup Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa.
