Women's Tennis Edged by Yeshiva

Match Results

QUEENS, N.Y.—With a guaranteed spot in the Skyline Conference semifinals on the line, Sarah Lawrence College women's tennis was nipped by Yeshiva University, 5-4, at Queens College Tennis Courts on Wednesday.

IN SHORT
Yeshiva (5-3, 5-1 Skyline) def. Sarah Lawrence (8-3, 4-2 Skyline), 5-4.

SKYLINE OUTLOOK
With the win, Yeshiva clinched a spot in the upcoming Skyline Championship. The third-place Gryphons need one more match to go their way to secure their spot. A win over St. Joseph's L.I. in the Gryphons' regular-season finale will be sufficient, or SLC will secure a spot with a loss by Mount Saint Mary College in either of the Knights' final conference matches.

GRYPHONS TAKE EARLY LEAD
SLC took an early lead in the match by winning two of the three doubles matches. Yeshiva was first on the scoreboard with an 8-2 win in the No. 1 doubles match, but the Green and White kept fighting. In the No. 2 match, senior Autumn Atkinson (Manasquan, N.J./George School) and Skyline Player of the Week Juliet Slade (St. Paul, Minn./Central) broke a 7-7 tie by winning the last two games of a 9-7 victory. At No. 3 doubles, seniors Sarah Fiordaliso (Buffalo, N.Y./Sweet Home) and Lane Garber (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) likewise turned a 7-7 tie into a 9-7 win, improving to 11-0 this season.

EYE FOR AN EYE
In singles play, the two teams split the first four matches to finish. YU's Shani Hava remained unbeaten this season after winning the No. 1 match in straight sets, and Yeshiva also picked up a victory in the No. 5 singles spot. For SLC, Atkinson won the No. 2 match, 6-1, 6-4, for her fourth-straight singles victory. In the No. 4 spot, Slade gave up six games but had no trouble closing out a 6-3, 6-3, triumph, also her fourth straight. Atkinson and Slade lead the Gryphons in singles wins this season.

THE SLIMMEST OF MARGINS
In the No. 6 singles match, SLC's Moni Spancheska (Skopje, Macedonia/NOVA International) fought back after a first-set defeat and won the second set, 6-4. After the two opponents knotted at 6-6, Yeshiva came out on top in a tiebreaker, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), tying the team score at 3-3. Gryphon Sofia Reh (Villanova, Pa./Radnor) was the final match on the courts, and after winning the first set, her Maccabee opponent won the second. In a super-tiebreaker, three points decided the outcome as Reh was defeated 4-6, 7-5, (10-7).
