Women's Tennis Shuts Down Purchase

Match Results

PURCHASE, N.Y.—Sarah Lawrence College women's tennis defeated Purchase College, 7-2, in a Skyline match at PC Tennis Courts on Monday. The win gives the Gryphons a 3-1 record in conference play, one victory short of the program's first-ever winning Skyline record.

IN SHORT
Sarah Lawrence (7-2, 3-1 Skyline) def. Purchase (4-4, 1-2 Skyline), 7-2.

FOR THE WIN
Sarah Lawrence improves to 3-1 in conference play in the Gryphons' second year in the league; with three matches to go, SLC is one win away from clinching a winning-record. While a win would not yet statistically guarantee the Gryphons a postseason berth, since 2004, no team with a winning conference record has failed to qualify for the Skyline tournament.

GETTING EVEN
The win over Purchase is the first for Sarah Lawrence since 2008. The all-time series is tied at 9-9 since 1989.

SWEEPING THE COURTS
SLC picked up its fourth doubles sweep of the season. In the No. 1 match, senior Nora Landes (Los Angeles, Calif./Cleveland Humanities Magnet) and sophomore Sofia Reh (Villanova, Pa./Radnor) escaped with an 8-6 victory. Skyline Player of the Week Autumn Atkinson (Manasquan, N.J./George School) and partner Juliet Slade (St. Paul, Minn./Central) handily won their No. 2 match, 8-4. In the final match, seniors Sarah Fiordaliso (Buffalo, N.Y./Sweet Home) and Lane Garber (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) cruised to an 8-2 win.

NAILBITER FINISH
Purchase earned one of its two points in the No. 1 singles match. Landes won the first set, 6-2, but PC's Emma Yavel won the second, 6-3. In the super tiebreaker, Yavel pulled away 10-4 to clinch the win. Purchase went on to win the No. 3 match over Reh, 6-2, 6-3.

VICTORIOUS GRYPHONS
At No. 2, Atkinson scored a break point to win her first set, 6-4, before leveling off the second set at 5-5. Atkinson won the next two games for her team-leading sixth singles win of the season, 6-4, 7-5. In the No. 4 spot, Slade gave up just one game of a 6-0, 6-1, triumph; she's given up just two games in her last three singles wins. Fiordaliso came away a winner in the No. 5 match, 6-2, 6-2, and Moni Spancheska (Skopje, Macedonia/NOVA International) earned her fifth win in the last six matches, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 6 match.

UP NEXT
Sarah Lawrence returns to action this weekend. On Sunday, the Gryphons face Skyline newcomer St. Joseph's College Brooklyn at noon. The Gryphons are 11-0 against the Bears since 2004.
