STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.—
In Sarah Lawrence College's first match of 2015, women's tennis was defeated by College of Staten Island, 7-2, at CSI Tennis Center on Friday.

Staten Island (2-0) def. Sarah Lawrence (0-1), 7-2.

RETURN TO SPLENDOR
Senior Sarah Fiordaliso (Buffalo, N.Y./Sweet Home) returned to the Gryphons after a year abroad and made an immediate impact on the team. She contributed to both of the Gryphons' team points. Teaming with classmate Lane Garber (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos)--who also spent 2014 abroad--the duo won their No. 3 doubles match, 8-5. Fiordaliso captured the No. 5 singles match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

TOUGH COMPETITION
SLC's record-holding doubles partnership of senior Autumn Atkinson (Manasquan, N.J./George School) and junior Juliet Slade (St. Paul, Minn./Central) were edged by the Dolphins in the No. 2 match. The Gryphons picked up half a dozen games but were overcome 8-6. Senior Nora Landes (Los Angeles, Calif./Cleveland Humanities Magnet) and sophomore Sofia Reh (Villanova, Pa./Radnor) were also defeated in their doubles match, falling 8-1 in the No. 1 spot.

RALLY FALLS SHORT
Sophomore Moni Spancheska (Skopje, Macedonia/NOVA International) had trouble getting her season started, falling 6-0 in the opening set of her No. 6 singles match. The Gryphon recovered, however, and knotted the second set at 5-5. In the end, her opponent picked up the final two games for a 7-5 second set.

DOLPHIN DOMINATION
Staten Island's Sabrina Bragerton-Nasert improved to 4-0 on the season, playing at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. In addition to a pair of wins over SLC, she picked up two wins in the Dolphin's season opener against Yeshiva University.

DEJA VU
The only other time that the Gryphons and Dolphins met was in October 2013. Staten Island hosted and won that match, 7-2.

UP NEXT
The Gryphons host John Jay College on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. Matches will take place at Andrews Courts on the SLC campus.
