Men's Basketball Clashes with Mount Saint Vincent

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—In a clash of Skyline rivals, Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball was edged by College of Mount Saint Vincent, 73-69, at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Saturday.

KEY MOMENTS
By the time the final seconds expired, the teams had exchanged the lead 12 times with 10 tied scores. The back-and-forth first half saw the teams struggle to pull away with a lead. Mount Saint Vincent had its largest lead of the game, 17-11, in the seventh minute of the contest before Sarah Lawrence bounced back to tie the score, 18-18. The Gryphons used a 10-2 run to break a 22-22 deadlock and take their largest lead, 32-24, with three and a half minutes to play in the period. At halftime, the teams were at a 38-38 stalemate.

Neither squad led by more than five points in the second half. CMSV took control early in the period to go ahead 45-40. The Gryphons responded and held their first advantage of the period with nine and a half minutes remaining, 52-51. Rookie Joseph Kleeman (Greenwood Village, Colo./Arapahoe) scored seven points for the Gryphons to swing a 54-54 tie into a 61-56 lead, the team's larges of the period. With just under two minutes to play, sophomore Austin Jones (Upper Marlboro, Md./Flint Hill School) converted on back-to-back free throws, and the squads were tied for the final time, 66-66.

Down the stretch, the Dolphins hit a pair of field goals that were offset by a lone SLC free throw, putting the visitors in front, 71-67 with 30 seconds to play. Jones pushed the pace with a fastbreak layup to halve the deficit, but the Gryphons were forced to foul to stop the clock. CSMV missed four straight free throws but collected a pair of offensive rebounds to retain possession. In the end, two final successful attempts from the charity stripe provided the decisive points in the Gryphons' narrow loss.

TOP GRYPHONS
Senior co-captain Graham Gilleran (San Francisco, Calif./Archbishop Riordan) scored 14 points in the opening half and finished with a team-high 16. Jones reached double figures for the fourth time in the last five games, and he gathered seven rebounds. Kleeman totaled 11 points with a game-high four steals.

Senior Jeff Jordan II (Smithfield, Va./Smithfield) collected six rebounds and scored 11 points, including seven from the foul line. Rookie BJ Sanders (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Prep) totaled six rebounds, six points and two blocks, while sophomore Parker Hagmaier (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) led the team with eight rebounds.

Sarah Lawrence travels to SUNY College at Old Westbury on Tuesday. The Gryphons return home to host The Sage Colleges on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
