Men's Basketball Earns First Win of 2017

Box Score HAVERFORD, Pa.—Sophomore Gryphon Austin Jones (Upper Marlboro, Md./Flint Hill School) scored a career-high 17 points to lift Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball to a 63-57 victory over non-conference Haverford College at Gardner Athletic Center on Wednesday.

IN SHORT
Sarah Lawrence (5-5) def. Haverford (2-8), 63-57.

KEY MOMENTS
The teams exchanged the lead throughout the first half as the squads were knotted in seven ties in the period. Senior Jeff Jordan II (Smithfield, Va./Smithfield) led all players with seven points in the period, shooting 3-for-4 from the floor. The Gryphons held the largest margin after a Jones layup made it a 23-17 game, but halftime found the teams in a 25-25 stalemate.

Senior Mat Gerak (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) scored the opening points of the second half, propelling Sarah Lawrence to a lead that it would hold for 17 minutes. A three-pointer by rookie Joseph Kleeman (Greenwood Village, Colo./Arapahoe) and a Jones field goal gave the Gryphons' their largest lead, 43-28. Haverford narrowed the gap to single digits, while SLC fought to fend off the Fords. A layup from senior Graham Gilleran (San Francisco, Calif./Archbishop Riordan) put SLC on top, 53-45, with six minutes to play.

Haverford rallied and scored the next seven points before the Fords erased the Gryphons' lead to take a 57-56 edge just inside the three-minute mark. From there, the stalwart Sarah Lawrence defense prevented the Fords from scoring any additional points down the stretch. Jones scored the game's final field goal, and five Gryphons free throws gave the Green and White the victory.

TOP GRYPHONS
Jones' personal-best 17 points came off 6-for-7 shooting and a 5-for-6 night at the foul line; he added five assists, a team-best six rebounds and a game-high five steals. Gilleran reached double figures with 11 points, while Jordan finished in double-digits with 10 points.

Kleeman finished the day with eight points, five assists and three steals. Gerak scored six points with four assists, and sophomore Parker Hagmaier (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) totaled five points, four rebounds and three steals.

Sarah Lawrence returns home for the team's next game. On Saturday, the Gryphons return to Skyline play against Purchase College. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m.
