Women’s Basketball Wins Inaugural Varsity Contest

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Sarah Lawrence College women's basketball team won its first-ever varsity contest Saturday, defeating Cooper Union 67-11 at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center.

RECAP
Sarah Lawrence outscored Cooper Union 36-0 in the opening period and led 48-2 at halftime, thanks to a 20-point effort from Taryn Penna (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) on 8-of-10 shooting.

The Gryphons held their commanding lead in the second half, outscoring Cooper Union 19-9 en route to picking up their first victory of the season.

Barbara Gao scored all 11 points for Cooper Union in the game.

TOP GRYPHONS
Penna paced the Gryphons with 25 points (10-14 FG) and 10 rebounds, along with four assists and five steals. Tess Carrier (Los Angeles, Calif./Palos Verdes) reached double-figures in her collegiate debut, posting 13 points, seven boards, four assists and four steals. Ruth Doberenz (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) finished with 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and a game-high six swipes.

Kaylin Yamada () recorded nine points, two rebounds, four assists and five steals, while Alexa Zartman-Ball (Washington, D.C./The Madeira School) contributed four points and five steals.
