KINGS POINT, N.Y. - Malin Segal (Wenham, Mass./Concord Academy) scored a season-high 26 points Wednesday, but it wasn't enough as the Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball team was defeated by Merchant Marine, 83-69, at Liebertz Gym.

Both teams came out hot to begin the game, shooting over 50-percent for the half, while combining to hit 19 three-point field goals. Merchant Marine opened up a 49-29 advantage in the period, but an 11-2 run from Sarah Lawrence trimmed the deficit with 2:13 left on the clock (51-40). The Mariners hit another triple in the final minute, going into halftime with a 54-40 lead.
Segal was near-perfect from beyond the arc in the opening frame, going 6–of-7 from long distance.
Sarah Lawrence came out as the more aggressive team in the second half, cutting the deficit to single-digits (54-47). Merchant Marine countered with seven unanswered points to extend its lead, but the Gryphons did not go away, shrinking the margin under 10 again with 10:38 remaining on the clock. The Mariners hit timely baskets throughout the period, maintaining a double-digit lead en route to picking up the season split.
TOP GRYPHON PERFORMANCES
Segal's 26-point effort was his 12th double-figure performance of the season and his second with at least 20 points. Segal nailed eight three-pointers in contest, tying a career-high.
BJ Sanders (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Prep) recorded 18 points, nine rebounds and three assists, while Austin Jones (Upper Marlboro, Md./Flint Hill School) added six points, five rebounds, four assists and a game-best three steals.
