YONKERS, N.Y. – For the first time in school history, the Sarah Lawrence women's soccer team qualified for the postseason, securing a spot in the Skyline Tournament following a 2-1 win over Purchase at Fleming Field.
IN SHORT
Sarah Lawrence (6-6, 4-3) def. Purchase (2-10, 1-6), 2-1.
RECAP
The Gryphons are the first women's team to qualify for postseason action since Sarah Lawrence moved to NCAA Division III in 2014-15.
Playing on back-to-back nights, Sarah Lawrence picked up where they left off following a nine-goal performance over Yeshiva, scoring two times in the first half.
Much like the win over the Maccabees,
Tiffany McBrayer gave Sarah Lawrence a 1-0 lead moments into the match. 1:21 into the game, the rookie finished to the far post from 10 yards out after creating enough separation from the Purchase back line.
Gaia Dennison scored her third goal of the year in the 13th minute. McBrayer notched her fifth assist of the season, feeding her classmate in stride down the middle of the field for a breakaway finish.
Sarah Lawrence has scored 38 goals this season with three games left to play, tying a team record set in 2017.
Purchase cut into the lead in the 55th minute, as Allie Scarpa slipped a ball past the goalkeeper in traffic off a corner kick from Brittany Esposito.
Needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Panthers continued to pressure the Gryphons' defense in the second half, but Sarah Lawrence was up for the challenge, as the back line continued to battle to prevent an equalizer. Keeper
Madison Mertsch made five saves, with none more important than her stop in the 61st minute to preserve the Gryphons' lead.
It is the first-ever victory over Purchase after dropping the first four meetings. With the win, the Gryphons set a team record for victories (6) and conference (4) wins in a single season. It is also win No. 11 for head coach
Maurizio Grillo, making him the winningest coach in program history.
