Women’s Soccer Clinches Home Playoff Game in 5-1 Win Over St. Joseph’s Brooklyn

YONKERS, N.Y. – The record-setting Sarah Lawrence women's soccer team added another chapter to its historic season on Wednesday, clinching the No. 4 seed and a first round home playoff game after defeating St. Joseph's Brooklyn, 5-1, on Senior Night at Fleming Field.

IN SHORT
Sarah Lawrence (8-7, 5-4) def. St. Joseph's Brooklyn (8-8, 5-4), 5-1.

RECAP
Women's soccer is the first team in Sarah Lawrence Athletics history to host a first round postseason game since the Gryphons moved to NCAA Division III. It was the Gryphons school-record eighth victory of season, becoming the second program in Sarah Lawrence history to finish a regular season with an overall record above .500, joining women's swimming.

It was Senior Night, and before the match, Sarah Lawrence Athletics and the Gryphons women's soccer program recognized their senior class, featuring Jordynn Figueroa and Sophia Spralja.

Both teams entered the day needing a victory to secure a first round game on their home turf for the first time in school history. Sarah Lawrence proved ready for the opportunity, scoring 27 seconds into the game. Tiffany McBrayer played a ball to Spralja, who chipped a shot over the keeper's head and into the netting for her seventh goal of the season.

Kiley Ritter, the three-time Skyline Rookie of the Week, scored in the 20th minute, slipping a ball past the goalie in stride following a long pass from Spralja. The rookie scored again in the 34th minute, finishing to the near post off a feed from McBrayer.

The Gryphons, coming off a 9-1 win at Brooklyn on Monday, scored twice more in the second half. Gaia Dennison found the back of the net in the 64th minute off a pass from Spralja, while Ritter scored for a third time in the 69th minute off a service from McBrayer, netting her team-record fourth hat trick of the season.

The defense of Sarah Lawrence was strong all evening, making timely deflections and clears. St. Joseph's Brooklyn, who entered the day with the second-most goals in the conference, was held to three shots in the match. Deserae Sequeira, one of the premier strikers in the Skyline, did not take a shot in the contest. Madison Mertsch made two saves in the victory.

UP NEXT
The first round of the Skyline Tournament will feature a rematch of Wednesday's game, as No. 4 Sarah Lawrence will host No. 5 St. Joseph's Brooklyn on Sunday (Oct. 28). Game time has yet to be announced.
