Men’s Basketball Competes in NYU Tournament; Sanders Named to All-Tourney Team

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team competed over the weekend at the NYU Tip-Off Tournament at Hunter Sportsplex. The Gryphons opened up with an 82-66 loss to NYU in the first game on Saturday, and dropped an 80-69 decision to Regis on the final day of action Sunday. At the conclusion of the four-team event, junior BJ Sanders landed a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

SANDERS NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
The forward averaged 17.5 points and 8.0 rebounds in the two games, highlighted by a career-high 31-point effort against Regis. Sanders became the second Gryphon in team history to score 30 or more points in a game, joining Max Mallory, who dropped 32 against Pratt in 2011. Sanders' 11 made field goals against the Pride are the most in program history.

Sarah Lawrence vs. NYU
In the first-ever meeting between the two schools, the programs traded baskets in the opening minutes. Tied at 12, the Violets scored six straight points, leading by as much as 12 in the half to take a 40-30 advantage into the locker room.

NYU, who shot 50-percent from the field for the game, pulled away in the second half, outscoring Sarah Lawrence 14-4 over the first 4:28 of the frame to take a 54-34 lead. The Violets maintained their margin throughout the period to secure a win and advance to the championship game.

Three players finished in double figures for Sarah Lawrence. Omar Jamaleddine scored a team-high 14 points, while adding six rebounds and a pair of blocks. Enike Anyia finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, two steals and one assist, while Austin Jones contributed 10 points, two assists and a pair of steals.

Gabriel Eng handed out a team-high three assists, while Sanders grabbed a squad-best eight rebounds.

The two teams exchanged baskets in the opening period, but a 7-0 spurt in the final 1:11 of the half gave Regis a 44-37 lead at intermission.

The Pride shot 61% in the second half to expand their margin, leading by double-figures for the entire half to pick up the victory.

Eng had a solid game offensively, connecting on 5-of-8 field goals for a season-high 14 points. The senior also recorded five assists and two steals. Jones collected seven points, two assists and one swipe, while Andrew Varoli, the Skyline Rookie of the Week, hit a pair of three-pointers.
