Gryphons Score 11 Runs in Win Over Alfred State; Splits Day
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Sarah Lawrence College softball team opened its 2018 season Sunday at the Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic at North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex. The Gryphons opened the morning with an 11-0 win over Alfred State, while falling to Rutgers-Camden 10-4 in the nightcap.

The Gryphons plated six runs on one hit in the second inning. Sarah Lawrence capitalized on an error following a sacrifice bunt from
Tricia McLain (Redding, Calif./Enterprise), scoring
Mackenzie Mindish (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) and
Kamaron McNair (Lawrence Township, N.J./The Hun School). The Gryphons scored two more runs off based-loaded walks, while
Taryn Penna (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) scored another on a wild pitch.
Sarah Lawrence tacked on five more runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a bases-clearing double from
Alexa Zartman-Ball (Washington, D.C./The Madeira School).
McNair, Zartman-Ball and
Em Hammett (Columbus, Ohio/The Wellington School) finished with one hit apiece in the win.
Mikayla Cunningham (Mayville, Mich./Millington) earned the victory on the mound in her season debut, limiting Alfred State to two hits while striking out three in 4.0 innings pitched.
Delaney Parker (Milford, N.H./Milford) was terrific in pitching the final inning, not allowing a hit while turning a double play.
Sarah Lawrence went 4-for-4 in the leadoff spot and went 3-for-4 with runners on base with less than two outs.

The Gryphons got on the board first, plating two runs in the opening inning thanks to a two-out double from
Karissa McAuley (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie). The Scarlet Raptors countered with a pair of runs in the second inning, but Sarah Lawrence regained its lead in the bottom of the frame, fueled by a RBI single from McAuley.
Rutgers-Camden plated three in the fourth inning, capped off by a RBI triple from Gabrielle Castellini. The Gryphons cut into the deficit with a run from
Tess Carrier (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes), but the Scarlet Raptors pulled away with one run in the fifth, two in the sixth and one more in the seventh to pick up the win.
