NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Sarah Lawrence College junior infielder
Taryn Penna (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) became the first Gryphon in the NCAA-era to record 100 hits Saturday in the team's Skyline opener at Mount Saint Mary. The defending conference champions took two games from the Gryphons, winning the first contest, 4-1, while taking the nightcap, 5-4.
Penna, the reigning Skyline Player of the Week, went 3-for-7 with two runs scored, while
Kamaron McNair (Lawrence Township, N.J./The Hun School),
Karissa McAuley (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie),
Riley Vuyovich (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and
Skyler Vallarta (Brea, Calif./Sonora) all recorded two hits apiece.
Sarah Shapiro (Germantown, Md./Northwest) and
Baylie Petit (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) each contributed a hit in the team's conference-opening doubleheader.
Game 1: Sarah Lawrence 1, Mount Saint Mary 4
Mount Saint Mary scored the game's first run in the sixth inning, but the Gryphons, the designated home team, countered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame, powered by a two-out single to left field from McNair.
The Knights pulled away in the seventh inning, scoring three runs on four hits and one error.
Despite being credited with the loss,
Mikayla Cunningham (Mayville, Mich./Millington) put together a strong six innings on the mound, limiting the Knights to five hits. The tri-captain pitched the first five innings of the contest, tossing two frames of perfect softball.
Delaney Parker (Milford, N.H./Milford) pitched in the sixth, while Cunningham returned to the circle in the seventh.
Game 2: Sarah Lawrence 4, Mount Saint Mary 5
The Knights got on the board with a RBI groundout in their first round at the plate.
Sarah Lawrence plated two runs in the third inning to take the lead. Vallarta got on base first with a single to right field, followed by Penna's 100th career hit, a hard-hit single up the middle. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on the next at-bat, a single from Vuyovich.
The Gryphons tacked on another run in the fourth, when pinch runner
Em Hammett (Columbus, Ohio/The Wellington School) scored from third base following a wild pitch. Sarah Lawrence scored one more in the fifth inning, a bunt from Petit to score Penna.
Mount Saint Mary gained a run back in the sixth inning with a RBI single, and marched back to take the lead with three runs in the seventh. All three runs were unearned and came with two outs on the field.
