Softball Scores Season-High 17 Runs; Sweeps Doubleheader at Lehman

BRONX, N.Y. – The Sarah Lawrence College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader at Lehman College Wednesday at Lehman's South Field. The Gryphons won the first game, 2-1, and completed the series sweep with a season-high 17 runs in the nightcap.

TOP GRYPHON PERFORMANCES
Eight different Gryphon had at least one hit on the day, including five Gryphon with multi-hit outings, featuring Tess Carrier (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes), Alexa Zartman-Ball (Washington, D.C./The Madeira School), Taryn Penna (Sparta, N.J./Sparta), Riley Vuyovich (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and Kamaron McNair (Lawrence Township, N.J./The Hun School). Vuyovich and McNair recorded three RBIs apiece.

Carrier, Zartman-Ball and Penna each scored three runs, while Vuyovich, Adrienne Samuels (Minneapolis, Minn./Columbia Heights) and Sarah Shapiro (Germantown, Md./Northwest) scored two each.  

Sarah Lawrence got a boost from its pitching staff, holding Lehman to a batting average of .196 over the two games.

It was the squad's first victories over Lehman since the 2009 campaign.

Game 1: Sarah Lawrence 2, Lehman 1
Lehman, who entered the day 13-2 all-time against the Gryphons, scored its lone run of the contest in the opening frame.

Vuyovich scored the Gryphons' first run in the sixth inning. The senior led off with a single to center and then stole second base. After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt, Vuyovich reached home on a wild pitch.

Sarah Lawrence plated one more in the seventh, thanks to a RBI single from Skyler Vallarta (Brea, Calif./Sonora), her first collegiate RBI.

Delaney Parker (Milford, N.H./Milford) earned the win in the circle, tossing a complete game. The first-year limited the Lightening to four hits while striking out six, allowing just two hits over the final six innings of play.

Game 2: Sarah Lawrence 17, Lehman 6
The Gryphons' offense was prolific in the opening frame, scoring a season-best eight runs. Five Gryphons recorded a RBI in the inning, including Vuyovich, McNair, Zartman-Ball, Carrier and Penna.  

Lehman got back three runs in the bottom of the first, but Sarah Lawrence extended its lead in the third inning, taking advantage of a pair of Lightening miscues to score three runs.

The Gryphons tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning. Kelsey Copley (West Jefferson, Ohio/West Jefferson) notched her first RBI of the season with a groundout, while Vuyovich reached home on a passed ball.

The Lightening answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame, but Sarah Lawrence responded with four more runs in the sixth, capped off by a two-run single from McNair.

Mikayla Cunningham (Mayville, Mich./Millington) was victorious on the mound, tossing 4.0 innings. The tri-captain limited Lehman to five hits and was charged with just one earned run. Karissa McAuley (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie) came in relief for the final 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two.
