BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Sarah Lawrence College softball team set a single-season record for wins Friday in the team's non-conference doubleheader with the College of New Rochelle at Mary Levine Field. The Gryphons won the opening contest, 3-0, while falling in the nightcap by a 3-1 score.
TOP GRYPHON PERFORMERS
Four Gryphon recorded atleast two hits on the afternoon, including
Tess Carrier (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes),
Alexa Zartman-Ball (Washington, D.C./The Madeira School),
Karissa McAuley (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie) and
Riley Vuyovich (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North). Zartman-Ball and McAuley each notched a RBI.
The Gryphons have now won 11 games this year, their most in team history. Sarah Lawrence has increased its win total in each of the last three seasons under head coach
Chelsea Sheehan.
Game 1: Sarah Lawrence 3, New Rochelle 0
The Gryphons scored the game's first run in the fourth inning, thanks to a RBI single from Zartman-Ball to score
Tricia McLain (Redding, Calif./Enterprise).
Sarah Lawrence plated two more runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run single from McAuley.
Mikayla Cunningham (Mayville, Mich./Millington) earned her fifth victory of the season in the circle, tossing her second complete game shutout of the year. The tri-captain limited the Blue Angels, who entered the day winners of 10 consecutive game, to five hits while striking out two.
Game 2: Sarah Lawrence 1, New Rochelle 3
The Blue Angels, coming off a sweep at NJCU Thursday, scored the first run of the contest in the fifth inning, and plated two more in the sixth.
Sarah Lawrence gained back a run in the seventh, capitalizing on an error, but were unable to complete the rally. The Gryphons left four runners on base in the loss.
McAuley was credited with a loss, but had a solid outing on the mound, striking out seven batters.
Gabryella Day stifled the Gryphons' offense, limiting Sarah Lawrence to three hits.
