Softball Sweeps Purchase For First Conference Wins of the Season

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Sarah Lawrence College softball team earned its first Skyline wins of 2018 Sunday, sweeping Purchase at Purchase College Softball Field. The Gryphons, who've now reached their win total of 2017, won the opening contest, 9-6, while taking the nightcap, 6-1.

TOP GRYPHON PERFORMERS
Four Gryphon finished with four hits on the afternoon, including Kamaron McNair (Lawrence Township, N.J./The Hun School), Karissa McAuley (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie), Mackenzie Mindish (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) and Riley Vuyovich (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North). Six different Gryphon recorded an RBI, including McAuley, Baylie Petit (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) and Skyler Vallarta (Brea, Calif./Sonora), who all finished with three apiece.

Sarah Lawrence hit .333 overall on the afternoon, notching 22 hits, 14 RBIs and 15 runs.

It's the Gryphons' third doubleheader sweep of the year and their second this week after taking two from John Jay on Thursday.

The victories are the Gryphons' first over the Panthers, as the squad entered the day 0-11 all-time against the Skyline foe.

Game 1: Sarah Lawrence 9, Purchase 6
Sarah Lawrence didn't waste time getting on the scoreboard, plating two runs in the opening frame, powered by RBIs from Petit and McAuley.

Purchase, picked to finish above the Gryphons in the preseason poll, scored three runs in the third inning to take the lead. Sarah Lawrence regained its edge in the fifth inning, thanks to a RBI from Petit and a two-out single from Mindish to score McAuley.

The Panthers countered in the bottom of the frame with three runs, but the Gryphons responded with three runs of their own in the top of the sixth inning, keyed by two-out RBI singles from Petit, McAuley and McNair, who recently notched her 100th career hit on Saturday.

Sarah Lawrence added insurance in the final frame, scoring two more runs, highlighted by a two-run single from Vallarta.

Not only was McAuley effective at the plate, she was also effective on the mound, picking up the win. She tossed 4.1 innings, yielding the Panthers to five hits while striking out three. The sophomore was clutch in the final two innings, allowing just one hit.

Game 2: Sarah Lawrence 6, Purchase 1
The Gryphons once again got out to a fast start, scoring two runs in the opening inning, thanks to a pair of two-out RBI singles from McNair and Mindish.

Sarah Lawrence plated another run in the second inning, as Tricia McLain (Redding, Calif./Enterprise) rounded the bases after a fielding error by the Panthers. The Gryphons added two more runs in the fourth, highlighted by RBIs from Vallarta and McAuley. Sarah Lawrence scored one more run in the fifth inning, when Vuyovich singled to left field to score McLain.

The Panthers lone run of the contest came in the sixth inning.

After tossing a complete game in a victory over John Jay, first-year Delaney Parker (Milford, N.H./Milford) returned to the mound to toss another complete game win. Parker limited the Panthers to four hits, not allowing a hit in her first 4.0 innings of action.

Sarah Lawrence opens up a 10-game home stand, beginning Friday (Apr. 13) with a doubleheader against New Rochelle at Mary Levine Field.
