Sarah Lawrence Athletics Unveils 20th Anniversary Logo for 2018-19 Season

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Sarah Lawrence College Athletic department has revealed a special logo design to mark the 20th anniversary of the Campbell Sports Center and Godric the Gryphon, the College Mascot.

"We are excited to celebrate 20 years of the Campbell Sports Center and Godric the Gryphon," said Director of Athletics and Physical Education Kristin Maile. "Not only will this season be an opportunity to reflect on 20 years of such iconic monuments in our history, it will be a chance to reflect on the student-athletes, coaches and SLC staff members that have helped Sarah Lawrence Athletics become the program that it is today."

The Campbell Sports Center was built in 1998 in honor of William D. Campbell, philanthropist and sportsman, and his wife, Beatrice Hawn Campbell. The couple traveled the world to extend the Scouting Movement into developing countries. The Campbells helped establish the World Scouting Foundation in 1968, believing that scouting could teach young people discipline, leadership and useful skills. Their only daughter, Margot Campbell Bogert '75, chairman of the Board of Trustees of Sarah Lawrence College (1996-2004), continued working on behalf of the World Scouting Foundation, Sarah Lawrence and other institutions.

The Campbell Sports Center is the hub for Sarah Lawrence student-athletes and the Sarah Lawrence Community for Physical Education courses. The building houses a swimming pool, rowing tank, weight room and exercise center, an indoor running track, squash courts, a basketball court, classrooms, lockers and administrative offices.  

As part of the planning for the new Sports Center, the "user" committee, comprised of SLC staff and students, including former Director of Athletics Mary Levine and Senior Game Day Administrator and former coach Joe Iannotti, sought out input from the campus community on the selection of the College Mascot. Though the college never had an official mascot, the committee felt the time was right and hoped to include a mascot in the design of the new facility.

After deciding between Gryphons, Ravens or Sparks, Sarah Lawrence chose the Gryphon to be the official College Mascot. The mythological creature is depicted as having the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. For centuries, the Gryphon has been a symbol of intelligence and strength.

In 2013, our Gryphon was given the name Godric, based on a campus-wide vote involving students, faculty, staff and alumni. Godric is a reference to Godric Gryffindor from the Harry Potter series. Godric Gryffindor was one of the four founders of the school of Hogwarts.

The logo will be used throughout the 2018-19 season, and can be found across all Sarah Lawrence Athletics social media platforms and publications. The logo will also be used on promotional materials throughout the year.
