First-Years Highlight Impressive 6-0 Win Over York in Season Opener

YONKERS, N.Y. – The Sarah Lawrence College women's soccer team opened the 2018 season Friday with a 6-0 victory over York College at Tibbetts Brook Park.

Second-year head coach Maurizio Grillo started five rookies in the season opening match, including Emily Anderson, Tiffany McBrayer, Kiley Ritter, River Pasquale and Gaia Dennison, which proved to pay dividends throughout the contest.

After setting a team record for goals last year, Sarah Lawrence picked up where they left off offensively, scoring four of its six goals in the opening half.

Ritter scored her first collegiate goal 43 seconds into the contest, ripping a shot from inside the box to the near post. Lauren Ashby, a 2017 Skyline All-Conference performer, found the back of the net in the 29th minute, thanks to a perfectly placed ball from Dennison, hitting Ashby in stride for the breakaway score.

Dennison posted her first goal in a Gryphons uniform in the 33rd minute, putting a nifty move on her defender to create enough separation for the left-footed shot. Pasquale got in on the scoring 55 seconds later, blasting a shot from outside the 18 yard box to the far post.

Ritter scored her second goal of the game in the 63rd minute, while McBrayer tacked on another score for the Gryphons in the 84th minute.

Sarah Lawrence took 25 shots in the contest, including 15 on frame, and finished with 15 corner kicks. The Gryphons back line stifled the Cardinals offense, limiting York to just one shot for the entire match. Madison Mertsch got the start in goal, while Andi Pfau made an appearance in net to begin the second half.

The Gryphons six goals are the most goals scored in a season opening match in program history.

With the win, Sarah Lawrence improves to 4-2 all-time against the Cardinals, winning the last three contests. The Gryphons have outscored York 15-0 during that span.

The Gryphons will rest up and return to action on Sept. 11 for a non-conference match at Lehman.
