NEW YORK, N.Y. – Sarah Lawrence College graduate Devon Peal '19 was named Skyline Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in women's swimming, announced by the league on Tuesday.

Peal becomes the fourth Gryphon ever to earn the citation, joining Hannah Lawson '18 (women's swimming), Cameron Martinez '16 (men's swimming) and Matias Sanchez '19 (men's tennis).

A Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award is presented to the first-team All-Conference performer who carries the highest-grade point average (minimum 3.30) for the semester in which the student-athlete competes. In the sports of basketball and swimming and diving, the highest cumulative grade point average (minimum 3.30) for both the fall and spring semesters of 2017-18 was used.

Peal, a 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year nominee, had a strong senior campaign, earning Skyline All-Conference laurels in two events. She earned First Team honors in the 100-yard backstroke, becoming a two-time conference champion in the event, while receiving Second Team recognition in the 200-yard backstroke, becoming a two-time all-conference performer in the race.

Peal graduated with 10 Skyline All-Conference citations, and is one of two Gryphons in team history to be crowned league champion in a backstroke event. She is the owner of four school records, including the 500-yard freestyle, 1,000-yard freestyle, 1,650-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke, a seven-year-old standard broken by Peal at her final collegiate meet. The swimmer is also a part of five record-setting relay performances.
