BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Sarah Lawrence College sophomore
Humza Obaid's first collegiate goal proved to be golden, as his score in the 89th minute led the men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Medgar Evers College Wednesday at Kingsborough Community College. It is the first win of the year for Sarah Lawrence and the first career victory for head coach
Evan Brandsdorfer.
In the squad's first meeting against the Cougars since 2016, Sarah Lawrence (1-1) turned in a gritty performance to earn the victory.
Carlos Rivadeneyra gave Sarah Lawrence a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute. The junior played a short corner kick to
Tristan Moehs, who flicked the ball back to Rivadeneyra, who ripped a shot from outside the box that went over the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper and into the netting.
The Gryphons held a 1-0 cushion into the second half until the 67th minute, when Medgar Evers (0-2) connected on the equalizing goal.
Following a back and forth 20 minutes of action, in a battle of attrition, Sarah Lawrence played a long throw-in into a scramble in the box, where Obaid was able to slip in a shot off a rebound for the go-ahead score.
Aaron Ashery earned his first win of the year in net, posting seven saves, including a critical stop in the 78th minute to preserve a 1-1 contest.
"Overall, I thought it was a very good performance from the guys and a great result for our first win of the season," said Brandsdorfer. "We fought hard from the first whistle to the last as proven by the game-winner in the 89th minute of play. We will enjoy this moment now but we immediately turn our attention to our first home game of the season on Saturday!"
Sarah Lawrence will make its 2019 Fleming Field debut on Saturday, Sept. 7, against Hunter College. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
