Total Team Effort Pushes Gryphons Past Camels

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball team won its second straight contest over Connecticut College on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Camels 57-49.

The win marked the first 2-0 start for the Gryphons as a member of the NCAA. Prior to 2015-16, SLC had not begun a season with two straight wins since the 2004-05 campaign, when it played in the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Conference of the United States College Athletic Association.

THE NUMBERS
  • Omar Jamaleddine led all scorers with 13 points. The junior also tallied seven rebounds, four steals, and three assists.
  • Isaiah Pean was perfect from the floor, going 4-4 on his way to nine points.
  • Enike Anyia contributed eight points, six of which came from the charity stripe. He also had three assists and four rebounds.
  • The Gryphons held on to the ball, surrendering just 12 turnovers.
  • The SLC bench put up 16 points in the total team effort.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Connecticut College jumped out to an early 16-5 lead at the 11:33 mark. The Gryphons clawed their way back, narrowing the deficit to one point with a little over six minutes remaining in the first half. Lucas Murray recorded his first collegiate points with a tip-back layup five minutes before the break, giving SLC a 19-18 advantage. Jelani Jackson went on a mini 5-0 run by himself, helping the Gryphons carry a six-point lead into the intermission.

The Camels would not back down, knotting the score at 34 near the 14-minute mark, then retaking the lead two minutes later. The teams traded buckets for the next four minutes and were deadlocked at 38 with nine minutes remaining in the competition. Sammy Marshall converted on a tough and-one with 7:35 left on the clock, sparking a 9-0 run for Sarah Lawrence. SLC maintained the edge for the remainder of the game. Connecticut College cut the lead to five, but that was as close the Camels came to a comeback. Enike Anyia knocked down two free throws in the final minute, sealing the win for the Gryphons.
