Davis Mathis has Double-Double at MSMC

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Davis Mathis put up a 10-kill, 11-dig performance for the Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball team, but it was not enough as the Gryphons lost for the first time in Skyline Conference play in a 3-0 defeat by Mount Saint Mary.

The 25-21, 27-25, 25-20 loss to the Knights meant the Gryphons dropped down to a tie for fourth in the Skyline Conference with St. Joseph's-Long Island. The win propelled Mount Saint Mary into a tie for sixth St. Joseph's-Brooklyn.

Mathis, a senior from Atlanta, Ga., notched her second double-double performance of the season. Mathis put down 10 kills and scooped up 11 digs for the Gryphons (10-9, 3-1 Skyline).

Mount Saint Mary (8-10, 3-3 Skyline) turned in its second-best hitting performance of the season with 46 kills on 107 attempts with just 12 errors for a .318 kill rate.

SLC hit at just a .192 clip (25-10-78) despite hitting .375 (13-1-32) during the second set.

Neither team was able to take control of the first set until late in the stanza when the Knights found themselves down 17-16 before reeling five consecutive points including three aces to go ahead for good in the set at 21-17.

The second set saw the Gryphons take a 24-21 lead thanks to consecutive kills by Carolyn Kelly and Athena Kazos, but the Knights withstood three set points en route to a 6-1 run to turn a three-point deficit into a two-point set victory at 27-25.

The third and final set saw a 12-12 tie turn into a 23-16 Mount Saint Mary advantage quickly as the Knights seemed to have everything go their way all night inside their home facility known as the Kaplan Center.

Kaille Ferguson dished out 22 assists in the absence of Mia Rector.
