Women's Soccer Plays Farmingdale to 1-1 Draw

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Cora Colvin's 10th goal of the season came at a time the Sarah Lawrence College women's soccer team needed it the most as the Gryphons tied Farmingdale State College.

The point both teams earned for the tie was the first point earned by SLC ever in the series and ended a nine-match winless streak against the Rams.

The result may not have been what the Gryphons (10-3-2, 7-0-1 Skyline) had wanted, but the tie did allow SLC to remain just two points back of the top seeded Rams (8-8-2, 8-0-1 Skyline).

FSC, which had outscored SLC 51-2 in their previous nine meetings dating back to 2014 when SLC first joined the Skyline Conference as a provisional member of NCAA DIII, came out strong and flexed its muscle scoring just 1:09 into the contest when Emily Zeblinsky netted her 10th goal of the season.

Colvin and her teammates knew they had it in them and were not going to roll over as the Gryphons fought back in a very physical contest in front of a loud and boisterous crowd.

Hannah Chaffin connected with Colvin just over 12 minutes after falling behind and Colvin delivered a perfectly timed shot past FSC's starting goalie Lindsey Jolly to make it 1-1.

The defensive units for both teams played spectacular soccer in not allowing many shots on goal as FSC had four while SLC had just two.

The Gryphons' goalkeeper Bridgette Lee saved three shots and artfully directed her teammates into the position she needed them in on free kicks by the Rams.

Play was back-and-forth the rest of the way and the physicality ramped up as the game went on and even produced a red card in the Rams' backup goalie Chloe Kensell in the 72nd minute after she came onto the pitch in place of Jolly after the halftime break.

The Gryphons, who played a woman up for the final 18 minutes, were not able to get a good attempt the rest of the way on net, but were still happy to bring home the point back with them in their final road contest of the regular season.

NEXT UP
The Gryphons will finish out the remainder of the schedule at the friendly confines of Fleming Field in Yonkers. The next opponent will be the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy with the kickoff schedule for Saturday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. The matchup will be the first ever against USMMA after the Mariners just started a women's soccer program this season.
