Gryphons Claim Victory on Senior Day

YONKERS, N.Y. – A 5-0 defeat of St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn on Wednesday night has the Sarah Lawrence College women's soccer team one match away from making history.

The Gryphons (12-3-2, 9-0-1 Skyline) are currently in second place in the Skyline Conference standings with 28 points. Mount St. Vincent sits atop the mountain with 30 points, but the Dolphins are finished with their Skyline schedule and SLC has one more contest to go.

Should SLC defeat Yeshiva University tomorrow night at Fleming Field, the Gryphons will not only be the first women's soccer team in school history to win a conference regular-season title in the NCAA era, but they will be the first program regardless of sport or gender to do so as well.

The win tonight over the Bears gave SLC nine Skyline Conference victory, which is a new program record after having won eight conference tilts during the 2019 season when they were 8-2 in Skyline play.

The Gryphons dominated every offensive facet of the contest against the Bears (5-10-1, 3-8-0 Skyline) including shots (27-3), shots on goal (15-1) and corner kicks (12-0).

SLC got on the board just 6:37 into the contest when Cat Faville found the back of the net off an assist from Hailee Duckrey.

It wasn't but about 15 minutes prior to her goal that Faville was one of the three seniors honored during Senior Day festivities.

Leah Burrer tallied an unassisted goal in the 20th minute for her first score of the season to put SLC up 2-0/

Lainie Cadieux, who is also a senior and was honored prior to the contest, added an insurance goal in the 32nd minute when she pushed a goal past the Bears' Alexis Breen off a corner kick from Cora Colvin. Breen misplayed the ball that was kicked slightly over her outstretched arms and to the waiting foot of Cadieux.

The second half did not get any kinder to the St. Joseph's-Brooklyn crew as SLC tacked on a goal by Colvin for her team-leading 11th goal of the season in the 49th minute before Burrer put the Bears out of their misery with her second goal of the match with less than 15 minutes remaining in the contest.

Along with Colvin and Faville being honored prior to the match, Alyssa Barahona was also honored as the third senior on the roster. While Barahona may not have scored, she did record a pair of shots including one on goal.

The rambunctious Gryphons bench was loud all night knowing that they had to keep their teammates on the pitch energized to pull out a win tonight before they could even worry about tomorrow's match as win tonight guaranteed at least second place in the conference standings and a first-round bye in the Skyline Conference tournament.

The goalie tandem of Bridgette Lee and Maya Pfeiffer combined for the shutout playing one half each with Lee logging a save on the only shot the Bears had om goal the entire night.
