Sarah Lawrence Sweeps Senior Day Tri-Meet

11.13.22

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – For the fourth Sturdy in-a-row to start the season, the Sarah Lawrence College women's swimming team put together a brilliant performance in the pool en route to some fantastic finishes.

The Gryphons defeated Baruch College 88-71 in the closest team points challenge while dismantling Brooklyn College 114-37 and Queensborough Community College 117-5.

SLC's Keilani Talma got things started on the winning way for her squad in the fourth event of the day, the 200-yard freestyle event. Talma cruised her way to the event victory in a time of 2:03.37, which was an impressive 16.75 seconds faster than the second place finisher from Baruch.

A trio of Gryphons was narrowly defeated by a Baruch swimmer in the 50-yard freestyle sprint as Baruch's Kira Chen touched the wall in a time of 27.88 compared to SLC's Josie Laur (28.05), Krista Burgess (28.22) and Eva Guarda Vazquez (28.71).

Katherine McKane continued her strong start to the season on her senior day, where she was victorious in the 400-yard individual medley with an almost seven second margin between herself and Brooklyn College's Anastasia Kutuzova. McKane finished the four stoke event with a time of 5:07.04 compared to Kutuzova's 51:13.01.

The second individual event Talma entered was also her second dominating win as she defeated Kutuzova by over five seconds when she finished the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.28 compared to Kutuzova's 1:06.83.

SLC went on a few races without a top finisher, but that did not deter McKane from finishing the women's 100-yard breaststroke event in a time of 1:11.52.

The team of Talma, Laur, Genevieve Chiappetta and McKane were like torpedoes in water during the final women's race of the day with that being the 400-yard freestyle relay. Talma got the foursome out team in first after her two legs of the race in a 58.60 second, which was 0:04.9 or so ahead of Baruch's Kira Chen.

Laur and Chiappetta increased the lead to more than 15 seconds before McKane finished the last leg in a time of 1:00.14 for a total team time of 4:05.58 compared to that of the foursome from Baruch that swam the same distance in a 4:59.49

In the men's portion of the competition, SLC competed in just one event,  the afternoon's first event. The Gryphons took points from all six finishers as Sean Fisherman completed the 50-yard freestyle event in a time of 36.41 while teammates Caleb Gerdeman (second – 39.51), Simon Kopecky (third - 46.10), Fernando Gonzalez (fourth - 50.00) and Dylan Bernard (sixth – 50.73) also finished the race.
