First Years Propel Gryphons Against Centenary

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team fell to Centenary University by a score of 65-61 on Wednesday night at the Campbell Sports Center. The Gryphons will look to bounce back as they travel to take on Pratt on Friday night in Brooklyn, N.Y.

By The Numbers
  • First Years Eamon Kelly and Chris Dougherty tied for the team-lead with 15 points apiece for the Gryphons
  • Dougherty also tallied three blocks and pulled down seven rebounds
  • Kelly grabbed six rebounds and had two steals on the evening
  • First Year Brady Burman scored a career-high 14 points for the Gryphons in the losing effort after earning the start

How it Happened

The first half saw the Gryphons and Cyclones exchange blows, with Sarah Lawrence jumping out to the first lead of the day thanks to two three-pointers from Kelly to start the game. The Cyclones were able to stay competitive, in large part thanks to 14 first-half points from Harrison Lucibello. As the half neared, the Gryphons found themselves up by three points with just over three minutes remaining thanks to a jump shot from Burman which would be just two of his 12 first-half points. An immediate answer came from Lucibello to bring the lead back down to one and position the Cyclones to take the lead before the half ended, and he would help them do just that. With 1 minute and 38 seconds remaining, Lucibello made his way to the free-throw line and connected on both shots to give the lead to Centenary with the clock running down. Following a steal by Kelly, Justin DiFabio stepped up to the free-throw line with 28 seconds on the clock and sank both shots to regain the lead for the Gryphons heading into the half.

As the clock started in the second half, the two teams would keep up the neck-and-neck play for the majority of the period, with neither team being able to pull away by more than four points until a three-pointer by Tyler White connected to give the Cyclones a 49-44 lead with 13:53 remaining. After an Amos Grey jumper and two consecutive baskets by Dougherty, the Gryphons found themselves with the lead just two minutes later. After Centenary rebounded to tie the game, a layup by Lucibello with 3:41 remaining would put the Cyclones up by a score of 61-59, only to be answered immediately by Grey to restore the tie. On the next possession, with 3 minutes and one second remaining, it was once again Lucibello to give his team the lead, but this time there would be no answer for the Gryphons, as they would fail to score for the remainder of the game. The Cyclones would also remain scoreless until two seconds remained on the clock and Shawn Falk went to the line following a Sarah Lawrence foul in an attempt to extend the game.
