BRONXVILLE, N.Y. –
Nate Davis of the Sarah Lawrence College men's volleyball team recorded an NCAA Division III record 40 kills in a 3-1 victory over St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn on Thursday night. The Gryphons then went on to defeat SJBK 3-0, sweeping the conference doubleheader.
NUMBERS
- Davis' 40 kills in game one came on 102 total attacks. The sophomore finished the match with 48 points. Davis now owns the NCAA Division III record for the most and second-most kills in a four-set match.
- Davis recorded 27 kills in the second match, finishing with 38 points. The sophomore led the team in digs, service aces, and blocks throughout both matches.
- Lukas Gates had a career-high 16 digs in the first match.
- Juan Paris etched a career-high 40 assists in the first match. Paris ended the evening with six service aces through both matches.
- The sweep moved the Gryphons to 3-2 in conference play, tying a program record for conference wins in a season.
MATCH 1
Trailing 7-5 in the first set, SLC ripped off a 5-0 run, going up by three. The set was close until the final point, but Sarah Lawrence never surrendered its lead, winning the set 25-22. The Gryphons led 10-9 in the second set then put together a 9-0 run, creating enough breathing room to carry the advantage until the final point. SLC won set two 25-18. SJBK took set three 25-21. Sarah Lawrence won the fourth set 25-22.
Nate Davis recorded the 40th kill of the night on the match-clinching point.
MATCH 2
SLC faced a four-point hole, trailing 12-8 in the first set. The Gryphons then scored 10 unanswered points, going ahead by six. Sarah Lawrence won the first set 25-16. SLC was up 14-11 in the second set then went on a 6-0 run. The Gryphons took the set 25-14. Leading 11-8 in the third set, Sarah Lawrence scored five consecutive points, holding the edge until the last point of the match. SLC won the third and final set 25-17.
