PURCHASE, N.Y. - Five different members of the Sarah Lawrence College softball team recorded an RBI in the Gryphons' doubleheader with Purchase College on Friday afternoon. SLC fell to the Panthers 2-1 in game one and 6-4 in the second game.
GAME 1
The Gryphons opened the scoring in the fourth inning.
Hannah Akin reached on an error.
Anna Brand singled to right field, advancing Akin to third base.
Alexa Zartman-Ball drove in Akin with an RBI single to right field. It was the second RBI of the season for Zartman-Ball.
The Panthers responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Both teams were held scoreless for the rest of the contest.
Bailey Nguyen finished with a season-high seven strikeouts.
GAME 2
Purchase built a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Bailey Nguyen tossed a scoreless second and third inning. Three Gryphons crossed the plate in the top of the fourth inning.
Anna Brand reached base on an error.
Alexa Zartman-Ball then singled down the left field line, moving Brand to second. Anna Thorson reached on a fielder's choice and Zartman-Ball advanced to second base on an error. Brand scored, narrowing the deficit to one.
The inning continued with
Jordyn Medina reaching base on a fielder's choice. Zartman-Ball went to third.
Kumi Tamura recorded her first RBI of the year on the next at bat, driving in Zartman-Ball on a fielder's choice.
Nitika Kamath then took one for the team, getting hit by a pitch. With runners at first and second,
Bailey Nguyen helped herself on the mound with a double down the right field line, scoring Tamura and generating a 3-1 advantage.
Purchase retook the lead in the bottom half of the fourth, adding four runs. Trailing 6-3 in the sixth inning, Sarah Lawrence cut the lead to two. With two outs, Nguyen roped her second double of the day.
Kristin Vargas drove her in with a single, marking the first RBI of the season for the first-year player. Purchase carried its two-run lead until the final out. Nguyen finished the game four hits.
