Kelly leads Gryphons against St. Joseph's College Long Island with Career-High in Scoring

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - Despite a career-high 16 points from Eamon Kelly, the Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team fell to the Saint Joseph's College of Long Island Golden Eagles by a score of 61-51 on Saturday afternoon at the Danzi Athletic Center.

  • Lucas Murray added 14 points for Sarah Lawrence to go along with six rebounds and four assists
  • Sophomore guard Amos Grey pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for the Gryphons

How it Happened

The Gryphons used nine of Eamon Kelly's team-high 16 points to build a lead in the first half as the first year from New Orleans, Louisiana connected from deep three times. Murray also scored six of his 14 points in the first half of play, helping Sarah Lawrence jump out to an early 8-2 lead which would set up the Gryphons to control the first half, but the Golden Eagles had other plans. Leading scorer Spencer Malloy would convert on a layup with 7:19 remaining in the half to tie the game at 17 points apiece and force the Gryphons to respond if they were remain in control at the half. Another 8-2 run for Sarah Lawrence would give the Gryphons another six point lead and with 3:58 remaining in the half, they seemed poised to take a lead into the halftime break. The final four minutes of play would ultimately see the Golden Eagles reduce the Sarah Lawrence lead to four points, but the Gryphons would take the lead into the half after holding the two leading scorers for Saint Joseph's to 11 combined points.

The second half began with the bigs on both teams getting involved early. Murray scored the first four points of the half to extend Sarah Lawrence's lead to eight points but Malloy would respond for the Golden Eagles by scoring three consecutive baskets to return the lead to two points. The Gryphons would maintain their narrow lead until 7:16 remaining in the contest as a Ryan McNeely made free throw would tie the game for the Golden Eagles. After trading baskets on ensuing possessions, a 6-0 run would give Saint Joseph's a two-possession lead with four minutes remaining. It would be Chris Dougherty who would bring the lead back to one possession as he knocked down a shot from beyond the arc with 3:15 remaining off an assist from Murray. After a defensive stop Kelly would convert on another shot from deep to tie the game up with 2:41 on the clock and give the Gryphons momentum. That momentum would be quickly lost as the following Saint Joseph's possession would see Alec Tabada answer with a three-pointer of his own to give the home team a three-point lead. After an empty possession for the Gryphons, the Golden Eagles would convert from long-range again to extend the lead to six points and what was a tied game just a minute ago was now a two-possession game. As the Gryphons attempted to get back into the game, teh Golden Eagles would pull away due to free-throws and as the final buzzer sounded, the Gryphons would fall by a score of 61-51.
