BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team fell to the St. Joseph's University of Brooklyn Bears by a score of 77-61 on Saturday afternoon. After falling behind early, the Gryphons made a strong comeback to bring the game back within reach but the Bears were able to remain in control throughout the remainder of the game.

By the Numbers
  • Kumi Tamura scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Gryphons in scoring.
  • Jordyn Medina pulled down 13 rebounds and added six points for Sarah Lawrence.
  • Colleen Coughlin catalyzed the second-half offensive surge for the Gryphons, scoring 14 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter.

How it Happened

The Gryphons got off to a slow start, falling behind 11-0 in the first quarter before finishing the first 10 minutes behind 24-8. The second quarter would be similar, as the Bears went into the halftime break up 46-28 thanks to a cold shooting start for the Gryphons. The third quarter would be much more promising for Sarah Lawrence, scoring 17 points in the period thanks to ten points from Tamura in the quarter. As the final quarter of play was set to begin, the Gryphons found themselves down 63-35 and looking to simply end the game on a positive note. What they did was bring the lead down to 16 points multiple times and force the Bears to play hard until the final buzzer. As mentioned, Coughlin led the offensive attack in the fourth quarter but contributions from Kaila Dorch and Demitra Loukopoulos also helped the Gryphons with their offensive surge, scoring 26 points in the final quarter and holding St. Joseph's  to 14. As the final buzzer rang, it would be the Bears that claimed the victory but the Gryphons who turned a runaway contest into a competitive game.
