Gryphons Jump out to Early 2-0 Lead against Maccabees

YONKERS, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's soccer team fell to the Yeshiva Maccabees 3-2 on Tuesday evening. The Gryphons took a 2-0 lead into the half before the Maccabees mounted a ferocious comeback in the second half.

Top Performers
  • Peter Miles opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the year
  • Simon Kopecky assisted Miles on the opening score, his first of the season
  • Dylan Peavoy scored five minutes before halftime, giving the Gryphons a 2-0 lead with his first collegiate goal

How it Happened

The Gryphons got ahead early with a header by the head of Miles, putting a cross from Kopecky past the Yeshiva keeper and giving the underdog Gryphons a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute. The remainder of the first half saw the Gryphons continue to pressure the Maccabees, totaling six corners in the first half and forcing YU keeper Kellian Marty to make five tough saves. Peavoy, the first year from Maynard, Massachusetts, found the back of the net after a rebound for his first career collegiate goal and gave Sarah Lawrence a commanding 2-0 lead to bring into the half.

The second half saw the Maccabees mount a dramatic comeback. The first of three scores would be off a corner kick, where Rafael Cohen would find teammate Alejandro Saul for the first goal of the night for the Maccabees, that would reduce the SLC lead to 2-1. Four minutes later Josh Ziarno would score his first goal of the day to tie the game and would tie the contest at two goals apiece. In the 78th minute Ziarno would strike again, giving the Maccabees the lead and the conference victory.
