Gryphons Secure Skyline Playoff Berth; Take Down Mariners 1-0

KINGS POINT, N.Y. - Reigning Skyline offensive player of the year Cora Colvin scored in the 11th minute to give Sarah Lawrence a 1-0 advantage over the USMMA Mariners as the Gryphons remained undefeated in conference-play on Wednesday night. Sarah Lawrence also secured a berth in the conference's tournament on Wednesday and remain tied with Mount Saint Vincent atop the Skyline standings.

Top Performers
  • Colvin scored her seventh goal of the season, which ended up being the game-winner
  • Grace Carter and Madeline Moor earned their second and third assists respectively on the play
  • Bridgette Lee made saves on all four shots faced, including some tough stops to keep the Mariners off the board

How it Happened

The Gryphons were awarded their first of six corner kicks a minute into the game and three minutes later defender Hailee Duckrey would put a shot on goal, only to be saved by USMMA's Margaret Ripperger. After a save by Lee on a shot by Faith Sammons, the Gryphons would take a run, but would be called back after an offsides call. With 11 minutes on the clock, the Gryphons had a throw-in deep into the Mariners' defensive zone. Moor found Grace Carter, who one-touched the ball to Colvin and after a dribble to clear space, the junior put the ball perfectly into the top left corner of the goal and past the outstretched arms of the USMMA keeper for the lone score of the game. USMMA's Morgan Mitchell, a 16-goal scorer last season, threatened with a shot-on-goal of her own at the 16-minute mark, but Lee turned the shot away, one of her four shots saved in the contest. The Gryphons would remain in control for the remainder of the half, until the Mariners had an opportunity with four minutes remaining. Alexx Forman bounced a shot off the post that would be the closest shot the Mariners would get all day, and despite a corner kick opportunity less than a minute later, USMMA would remain scoreless throughout the remainder of the half.

The Gryphons remained in control throughout the second half, keeping the pressure on USMMA and keeper Ronnie Florek, who took over in goal after the break. The Mariners had one of their best opportunities of the game in the 81st minute, as Marina Ronzoni took a corner kick opportunity and placed a beautiful ball in the box. Teammate Emma Cox headed the ball off the kick, but it would be wide left and the Gryphons would remain on top. Ronzoni would take a shot of her own a minute later, but it would also end up wide left and Sarah Lawrence would have time to regroup for the final few minutes of the contest. In the final minute, Ronzoni had another opportunity, putting a free kick inside the box for her USMMA teammates, but Lee was able to pounce on the ball before any Mariner could get a foot on it. As the final 50 seconds ticked off the clock, the Gryphons celebrated their seventh Skyline victory this season to remain in a tie with Mount Saint Vincent for first place in the conference heading into the final week-and-a-half of the season.

Up Next

The Gryphons (10-4-3, Skyline 7-0-2) will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Aviator Field to take on St. Joseph's Brooklyn for a 1:00 p.m. Skyline matchup. With a Manhattanville loss earlier today, the Gryphons clinched a berth in the Skyline tournament and are now hoping to stay as a top-two seed to earn the tournament's first-round bye.
