Gryphons Celebrate Senior Day; Set Program-Bests in Home Doubleheader Sweep

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's volleyball team honored their 2023 seniors before taking victories in both of their final two matches of the season to set NCAA era program-bests in both overall wins and conference wins. The Gryphons defeated Mount Saint Mary 3-1 in the first match of the day before sweeping Medgar Evers 3-0 in the second match.

Top Performers
  • Athena Kazos earned another double-double in match #1 with a 14-kill and 17-dig performance in addition to a match-high six service aces
  • Kaille Ferguson totaled 29 digs on the day, further cementing her place atop the SLC all-time digs leaderboard
  • Mia Rector did the same, adding 40 assists to her already impressive career total to help the Gryphons take both matches

Match #1: SLC Defeats Mount Saint Mary 3-1

The Gryphons and Knights entered Saturday's matchup battling for the Skyline conference tournament's #5 seed. The two teams secured playoff berths earlier in the week, but would find themselves battling on Saturday for playoff positioning. The first set would be a story of scoring runs, with the two teams battling back-and-forth until an eventual run by the Gryphons that saw the hosts take seven of eight points to turn a 16-14 lead into a commanding 23-15 margin. A kill by senior Skyler Kawecki-Muonio would seal the first set and give the Gryphons an important 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set was controlled by Mount Saint Mary from start to finish. The Knights took the first four points of the set and jumped ahead to an early 7-1 lead. Despite kills by Kazos, Georgi Massey and Carolyn Kelly, the Knights would remain in control, maintaining a narrow lead until back-to-back kills by Kazos tied the set at 21 points apiece. The teams traded service errors but a key block gave the Knights set-point and two rallies later the visitors tied the match at one set apiece.

The third set was another back-and-forth affair, as the two teams remained neck-and-neck before finding themselves knotted up at 15 points apiece. The Gryphons then took control, using a five-point run featuring three Kazos service aces to take a 20-15 lead. Two late-set kills by Kawecki-Muonio would help the Gryphons take the set and a 2-1 advantage in the match.

The fourth and final set would see the Knights take control early and threaten to push the match to a deciding fifth set. The Gryphons would answer once again with a scoring run in the middle of the set, turning a 16-13 deficit into a 21-18 lead thanks to service aces by Rector and Ferguson as well as a huge block by Milly Guemple and Carolyn Kelly. After a score by MSMC, Massey, Kazos and Kawecki-Muonio would all register kills as the Gryphons reached match point with a chance to place themselves above the Knights. After a MSMC point, the Gryphons secured the match with a service error by the Knights, setting up a rematch with Merchant Marine in the Skyline quarterfinals.

Match #2: SLC Defeats Medgar Evers 3-0

The Gryphons were in control throughout the entirety of the match against the Medgar Evers Cougars, taking the match with set scores of 25-8, 25-14 and 25-7. In the first set, the Gryphons used six service aces to get ahead and three late-set kills by Kazos to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. After a 7-1 start to the second set, SLC remained in control and used two late-set kills once again to seal the set, this time by Kawecki-Muonio. The third set was the most lopsided, as the Gryphons jumped ahead 11-2 and did not look back. After an eight-point scoring run, the Gryphons were up 20-5 and a Mia Rector kill set up match point and a Medgar Evers error gave the Gryphons the 3-0 match victory.

Up Next

The Gryphons (14-10, Skyline 7-4) will now travel to Farmingdale, N.Y. as the Farmingdale State Rams will welcome them on Tuesday night for a Skyline Tournament Quarterfinal matchup. The Gryphons fell to the Rams in three sets earlier this season and the two teams will now battle to see who moves on to the Skyline Semifinals.
