Gryphons Host Coast Guard Academy for Home Opener

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence Gryphons welcomed the Coast Guard Academy to the Campbell Sports Center for their home opener on Wednesday night. The Gryphons fell to the visiting Bears by a score of 70–57 after a hard-fought game.

Top Performers
  • Senior Lucas Murray paced the Gryphons offensively, scoring 15 points on 9-11 shooting from the free-throw line. Murray also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds
  • Brady Burman and Derek Hickman scored 10 points apiece, with Hickman racking up seven rebounds
  • Kyle Jefferson scored eight points on two-of-five shooting from deep and totaled four assists

How it Happened

The two teams remained neck-and-neck throughout the majority of the first half, with the visiting Bears finally taking an 11-7 lead with a Trevor Parks layup off a turnover. Any momentum shifted to the Bears would flow right back to the Gryphons as Eamon Kelly would find Hickman for a dunk 30 seconds later. The dunk would start a 7-2 run that would tie the contest at 14 with just under nine minutes to play in the half. The teams would tie at 16 and 18 before a four-point play by Burman gave the Gryphons a 22-18 lead with under six to play before the intermission. Coast Guard would then take the next 12 points and take a 30-22 lead with just over two minutes in the half. Jumpers by Jefferson, Hickman and Andrew Kim reduced the lead to four heading into the half as the Gryphons entered the intermission trailing 28-32.

A steal by Kim to start the half turned into another Hickman dunk, this time off a Jefferson assist to reduce the lead to just two points. Coast Guard would once again have an answer, as a minute later they responded with a three-pointer to regain a five-point advantage. The two teams would remain four-to-seven points apart and three made free-throws by Lucas Murray  reduced the lead to four. The Bears would answer with another run, started off by a Trevor Parks three-pointer and punctuated with a Jordan Frazer jumper to extend the lead to double-digits. After layups by John Kairouz and Chris Dougherty, two more Murray free-throws would reduce the lead to six with just over five minutes remaining, but it would be the closest that the Gryphons will get to the Bears, as they responded by another make from deep and ended the game on a 7-1 run to seal the victory by a score of 70-57.
