Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Gryphons and Mariners' Winner Decided in Final Second of Play

KINGS POINT, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team fell to the USMMA Mariners by a score of 55-57 on Wednesday evening. The Gryphons tied the game with 12 seconds remaining before a score with 0.6 seconds on the clock gave the Mariners a two-point win.

Top Performers
  • Eamon Kelly put up a 22-point effort for the Gryphons on 46% shooting from deep
  • Senior Lucas Murray scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds for SLC
  • Andrew Kim scored seven points with six rebounds and a team-high four assists

How it Happened

The Mariners struggled from the field in the first half, shooting under 40% from the field and 23% from deep, but 11 points from Bryce Bristow, who did not miss from the field, paced the team and carried them to a 29-22 halftime lead. The Gryphons stayed in the game in large part due to three triples from Kelly, whose nine points led SLC in the first 20 minutes as the Mariners earned eight steals in the half.

The second half was marked by Bristow failing to score, taking just one shot in his 11 minutes of play after getting in foul trouble. Kelly and Murray also combined for 22 points in the second half, leading a comeback that reached its pinnacle with a Kelly jumper reducing the lead to four with four and a half minutes remaining. The Mariners scored twice in response to extend the lead to nine, but a pair of free throws from Kim and a Chris Dougherty triple reduced the lead to four once again, this time with 2:28 remaining. The Mariners remained ahead, taking a six-point lead into the final minute of play. Kelly struck again from deep to reduce the lead to three with 53 seconds left on the clock and a missed jumper by Bristow 30 seconds later landed in Dougherty's hands, with the Gryphons having 17 seconds and a chance to tie the game. Kelly came off a screen from Murray and hit another triple, this time from three feet beyond the arc and to tie the contest with 12 seconds on the clock. The Mariners had a chance to take the lead and with 0.6 seconds remaining, Caleb Hutchins scored under the basket to give the Mariners their final leave. A three-quarters court heave as time expired would not connect for SLC as the Mariners emerged victorious in a Skyline nail-biter.
