Gryphons Celebrate Senior Day against Privateers

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team's 2022-23 season has come to an end as the Gryphons lost to Maritime College on Saturday, February 18th by a score of 70-48. The team celebrated three seniors prior to the game, as Reuben Egan, David Gelb and Chris Torres all received recognition for their accomplishments throughout their respective careeres. The Gryphons finished 5-11 in Skyline play and 7-18 overall after playing a tough non-conference schedule, including a game against then-top-ranked Christopher Newport University in November.

By the Numbers
  • Torres led all Gryphons in scoring with 14 points, connecting from deep four times.
  • Eamon Kelly ended the season with a 10-point effort while pulling down three rebounds
  • Egan and Gelb each scored once and both found fellow-senior Torres for three-pointers in the final five minutes of play
  • Amos Grey scored nine points, including a 5-for-6 showing at the free-throw line in addition to pulling down five rebounds

How it Happened

The game started off heavily in favor of the Privateers, as the game's leading scorer, Theo Noble, scored ten points in the first six minutes of play to give Maritime a 15-4 lead. The Gryphons would fight back, using eight points from Kelly throughout the next five minutes of play to bring the lead down to seven points, but despite the resurgence from the Gryphons, it would be the Privateers who would have an answer to every Sarah Lawrence scoring run. With five minutes to play in the half, the Gryphons had fallen behind 31-17 after Noble knocked down a pair of free-throws, but the Gryphons would not give up yet. Kelly, Torres and Grey would score on consecutive possessions to reduce the lead to seven points once again, this time with 3:42 remaining in the first half. Both teams would go cold from the field for the remaining three minutes, with Maritime shooting 1-for-6 for the remainder of the period and the Gryphons failing to score from the field, relying on one Justin DiFabio free-throw to reduce the Maritime lead to eight points heading into halftime.

The Privateers would continue to build their lead steadily in the second half and the period started very similarly to how the first half ended. Much like the final 3:42 of the first half, the Gryphons were held scoreless from the field to start the second half. It took a Reuben Egan layup to break the scoreless drought with 10:02 remaining in the contest. Following the layup by Egan, the Gryphons found themselves trailing by 26 points and would not be able to overcome the large deficit. Even with 11 of Torres's 14 points coming in the final eight minutes of the game, the Gryphons would have too much ground to make up and not enough time as the Privateers would prove victorious at the final buzzer by a score of 70-48.

The Gryphons (7-18, Skyline 5-11) finished the season positioned in fourth place in the Skyline conference's North division and in ninth place overall in the 12-team conference. With three seniors graduating, the Gryphons will return 15 players, including four starters, and the young team will look to improve upon the positives from this season.
