BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's volleyball team took part in a Tri-Match hosted by St. Joseph's University of Brooklyn on Saturday, taking on the Yeshiva Maccabees before ending the day against the hosting Bears. The Gryphons took their first set of the season from the hosting Bears before taking the hosts to a 31-29 fourth set in the final game of the day.
The Gryphons took on Yeshiva to start the day, falling to the Maccabees three sets to none despite an 11-kill effort from
Felix Massey and an impressive 12-assist performance from fellow senior
Juan Paris.
Ralph Calle-Schulz and
Lance De Leoz paced Sarah Lawrence in digs with ten and nine apiece in the match, setting up Massey and others to keep close to the Maccabees. Despite a lopsided 3-0 match victory, the Gryphons and Maccabees battled in a close third set, with Yeshiva finally taking the set and match after needing to put up 26 points to hold of the Gryphons.
After falling to the Maccabees, Sarah Lawrence would take on the hosting Bears, who had defeated Yeshiva three sets to one earlier in the day. The Bears grabbed an early victory in the first set but it would be the Gryphons who would battle back to win their first set of the season by a score of 25-19 and to even up the match at one set apiece. Kills by Massey, Paris andÂ
Aidan Roney all set up the victory for the Gryphons at various points throughout the final stretch of the set. Despite the momentum and the set victory, it would be the Bears to take the next set by a score of 25-17 before the two teams would find themselves entangled in a marathon of a fourth and final set. The Bears would find themselves in control by a score of 21-17 but a five-point run by the Gryphons would give Sarah Lawrence a late 22-21 lead and make the set anyone's to take. After trading points, the two teams sat tied at 26 before the Gryphons would find themselves with three straight set-point opportunities. Despite the one-point advantages, Sarah Lawrence could not convert on their opportunities, eventually leading to a three-point run by the Bears to claim the set by a score of 31-29.Â
