Career-High 12 Strikeouts by Pechefksy lead Gryphons against St. Joseph's (L.I.)

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - Shirin Pechefsky totaled 14 strikeouts, including 12 in an impressive game one performance as the Sarah Lawrence softball team wrapped up their 2023 season. The Gryphons fell to the Golden Eagles in both ends of the doubleheader by scores of 9-2 and 10-2.

By the Numbers
How it Happened

The first game remained scoreless heading into the bottom of the second when the Gryphons would take the first lead of the day, with the aforementioned Pechefsky scoring on a walk by Collins. The Gryphons would add another run one batter later as Zuniga would single to drive in Jane Joncha and give Sarah Lawrence a two-run lead. The Golden Eagles would immediately answer, putting up a run in the top of the third thanks to a Antonia Busa RBI single, but St. Joseph's would not be able to tie the game up thanks to three straight strikeouts by Pechefsky to end the inning. Despite the inability to catch the Gryphons in the third, it would be the visitors who would strike next, putting up four runs in the top of the fourth as they strung together five hits in the inning to pull ahead of Sarah Lawrence with a lead that they would keep throughout the game, eventually taking the contest by a score of 9-2.

Game two started out similarly, with neither team getting on the board in the first inning. This time, however, would see the Golden Eagles take a second-inning lead thanks to two singles that would drive in a combined three runs. The Sarah Lawrence offense would be unable to keep up, eventually finding themselves down 8-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning despite solid efforts from Zuniga and Pechefsky on the mound. In the bottom of the fourth, Brand would open the inning with a single to get on base and after a fielder's choice by Pechefsky, the latter would be at first with one out. The first year from Brooklyn, N.Y. would advance on a wild pitch before a single by the aforementioned Leonard would bring her in and give the Gryphons their first run of game two. Brand would come up to bat again in the fifth inning, this time with Vargas and Zuniga on base. The junior would send a single into left-center and drive in Vargas from second to bring the score to what would turn out to be a final tally of 10-2.

The Gryphons (2-20, Skyline 2-16) have now completed their 2023 season and will look towards next year after not graduating any seniors. The Gryphons will bring back many key contributors in addition to adding head coach Kaleigh Roop's first full recruiting class as they look to build on the team's progress from this season.
