Gryphons Shut Out Albertus to Open Season

NEW HAVEN, CONN. - The Sarah Lawrence women's tennis team wrapped up their season-opening match by sweeping host Albertus Magnus College 9-0. The Gryphons, two years removed from a Skyline championship, are off to a good start in Joey Binder's first season as the head coach of the team.

The Gryphons saw impressive performances from all positions, starting with 2022 Skyline Co-Player of the Year Simi Rao, who defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-3. Rao then teamed up with senior Sasha Conner in doubles to earn a commanding 8-2 victory in the first flight. Conner was successful on her own as well, winning in straight sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-3. First-Year Neomi Spellman was the highlight of singles play, shutting out her opponent in straight sets in the third singles flight. The first year teamed up with senior Chloe Cohen in second doubles and took home another victory, by an 8-3 score. Cohen won her singles match by default and Jackie Palmen and Kyra Johnsen did the same in their doubles bout. Palmen and Johnson both earned their first collegiate victories in singles play, with Palmen winning 6-1, 6-2 and Johnsen nearly emulating Spellman, winning 6-0, 6-1.

The Gryphons (1-0) will return to action on Wednesday as they host Hunter College for a 6:00 p.m. non-conference bout in Bronxville, N.Y.
