Gryphons Battle Gothic Knights to Draw after Weather Delay

YONKERS, N.Y. - After an hour-long delay due to inclement weather, the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons and New Jersey City Gothic Knights played to a 1-1 tie. The two sides both scored late in the second half, with NJCU getting ahead in the 84th minute and the Gryphons tying the game one minute later.

How it Happened

The two teams battled throughout the first half, with the Gothic Knights having opportunities in the attacking zone, but where consistently shut down by Daniela Perez, Hailee Duckrey, Delaney Julianna and the Sarah Lawrence defense. The Gryphons had multiple runs that were called back on offsides calls, but managed to put four shots on goal in the half.

The second half was a similar story for both teams, with the Gothic Knights getting plenty of shots up, but the SLC defense and keeper Maya Pfeiffer were able to turn them away at nearly every opportunity. The breakthrough was off a corner kick opportunity when Becky Lopez took the corner pass from Nyrohah Alvarenga and got it past Pfeiffer for the lead. The Gryphons answered back a minute later as Cora Colvin and Chaffin played a give-and-go perfectly and as Chaffin took the ball into the corner she found Lungren on a cross and the senior captain ricocheted a shot off the crossbar to tie the game. The game would not be over, as the visitors would get a free kick opportunity from about 35 yards out and four seconds remaining on the clock. Despite a ball put into the box, the visitors would not score and the two teams would remain tied at the final whistle.
