Gryphons Remain Undefeated in Skyline Play; Defeat Privateers 3-0

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence volleyball team cruised to a victory over the Maritime Privateers on Thursday night, winning the match three sets to none. The Gryphons now sit atop the Skyline women's volleyball standings with a 3-0 conference record and a 6-4 mark overall.

Top Performers
  • Georgi Massey led all players with six service aces in the contest, including two back-to-back that clipped the net and went over to claim the second set
  • Mia Rector once again led the Gryphons in the assist column, this time with 19
  • Kaille Ferguson and Tabitha Hardin Zollo both tallied double-digit digs, Ferguson with 15 and Hardin Zollo with 11

How it Happened

The first set of the match did not give the impression of a three-set match, as both teams remained within arms reach of the lead throughout the first half. The Gryphons took an early 5-1 advantage but would find their lead reduced to just two points moments later as the Privateers rallied to bring the score to 8-6. The teams would trade scoring runs twice over and after a Maritime kill, the set was 14-15, still narrowly in favor of the home team. The hosts would go on a four-point run, using two kills and a service ace from Ferguson to take a 19-14 lead that they would not surrender for the remainder of the set. Two late-set service aces from Massey would bring the set to 24-18 and after an SLC attack error, the Gryphons would capitalize on a Maritime mistake and take the set 25-19.

The second set also foreshadowed a close contest, with the Privateers holding an early advantage and the two teams refusing to separate by more than a couple points. The two teams would remain close and eventually find themselves knotted at 13 points apiece. A five-point run by Sarah Lawrence including two kills by Athena Kazos would propel the Gryphons into a lead that they would keep for the remainder of the set before the back-to-back aces by Massey secured a 25-17 set victory.

The third and final set started out rocky for Sarah Lawrence, falling behind 6-3 before rallying behind two more of Massey's game-high six service aces to reclaim the lead at 8-7. After a back-and-forth battle in the middle of the set, the Gryphons found themselves up 15-12 and would take control of the set from that point on. After a Maritime service error it would be a string of serves by Skyler Kawecki-Muonio that would allow the Gryphons to take seven straight points and jump ahead to a comfortable 10-point lead. The senior would get a service ace of her own and benefit from an impressive block by Carolyn Kelly and the aforementioned Kazos as the Gryphons pulled ahead 22-12. Kelly would tally another kill and Kazos a service ace before SLC found themselves at match point. A beautifully placed attack by Mia Rector straight off a dig would find the open floor and give the Gryphons a 25-14 set victory and another Skyline match victory
