Gryphons start off strong in Skyline Play; Defeat Maccabees in Three Sets

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Senior setter Mia Rector recorded her 1000th career assist as she helped lead the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons to a 3-0 victory over the Yeshiva Maccabees. The Gryphons now sit at 2-0 on the season and are the only Skyline school with a conference victory thus far.

Top Performers
  • The aforementioned Rector led all players with 11 assists
  • Athena Kazos once again led the team in kills, this time with 11 in addition to her four aces
  • First-Year Milly Guemple had nine kills, seven digs and three aces for the Gryphons

The Maccabees jumped out to an early 6-3 lead in the first set on the back of two service aces and a Sarah Lawrence setting error. The two teams would then embark on a long journey of exchanging two-to-three point runs up until the Gryphons found themselves down 12-10. The visitors would then take five straight points, three of which came on service aces by Guemple. The Gryphons would claim a 20-16 lead minutes later, but this time it would be Yeshiva to storm back, taking five straight points and the lead. The Maccabees would stay ahead and find themselves at set point with a 24-22 lead, but the Gryphons would not go down without a fight, taking three straight points to give themselves a set point opportunity. After a Yeshiva kill to tie the set up once again, the Gryphons took the next two points thanks to a Milly Guemple kill and a block by sophomore Raegan Lacombe secured the set victory.

The second set was a much different story as the Gryphons jumped ahead and stayed ahead. The team took a 15-3 lead and carried it into a 25-6 set victory, sealed by another kill from Guemple.

The third and final set saw the Gryphons continue all momentum gathered in the second set, jumping out to an 11-0 lead and continuing their dominance throughout the set, eventually leading 23-7 and taking the set by a score of 25-13.
