Trio of Gryphons Propel SLC over MSMC in Intense Skyline Battle

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team earned their second consecutive conference win, defeating the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College by a score of 77-73 on the back of 58 points from a trio of scorers.

Top Performers
  • Eamon Kelly led all scorers with 24 points, adding five rebounds, a block and a steal
  • Braden Burman scored 19 points while pulling down seven rebounds and totaling two steals
  • Lucas Murray scored 15 points for SLC while grabbing five rebounds

How it Happened

The game started off with two layups by Murray but an immediate triple by the Knights in response would foreshadow a back-and-forth affair. The game would be tied at both nine and 13 points apiece before the Knights got out to a six-point lead a few minutes later to lead the Gryphons 27-21. A jumper by Noah Elovtiz-Fields, a triple from Kelly and a jumper from Burman got the Gryphons right back in the game and gave the hosts a one-point lead with five minutes remaining in the first half of play. The Knights would make six free-throws over their next four possessions, but a layup by sophomore John Kairouz and another triple from Kelly left the game tied once again, this time with three minutes remaining in the half. With just over a minute remaining, Burman would find his way to the line after a made layup and convert for the three-point play which would give the Gryphons a four-point lead and control of the game's momentum heading into the break. Another score by Murray off a pass by Derek Hickman would extend the lead to six points and after a single made free throw in the final minute by the Knights, the Gryphons took a five point lead into the intermission.

The Knights came out of the gates hot in the second half, tying the game with over 15 minutes left on a three-pointer Ryan Graham and taking the lead a minute later on a Justin Rivera layup. The visitors would hold the lead for the next five minutes until a made jumper by Burman gave the Gryphons the lead back by a score of 50-49, the final lead change of the night. Just a minute later the Knights would pull within one point again and Burman would answer the call, connecting from deep off a kick-out pass by Chris Dougherty. The big man from South Carolina would get a bucket of his own just 35 seconds later, hitting a jumper to extend the Sarah Lawrence lead to six points with eight minutes of game remaining. Dougherty would score again a couple possessions later, taking an Andrew Kim pass and scoring from deep to extend the lead to nine points. After a MSMC layup, Kelly would take his turn striking from long range, giving the Gryphons the game's first double-digit lead with a 63-53 score. The Knights immediately answered with a shot from deep but Kelly would step up on the other end, scoring in the mid range to keep the Gryphons ahead comfortably. Just 12 seconds later the Knights struck again from long range, reducing the lead to two possessions and calling a timeout with 5:23 remaining and a score of 65-59 in favor of SLC. Burman would be the next to score, striking again from the mid range, but the Knights would answer with a triple and two trips to the free-throw line, bringing the lead down to two points with two-and-a-half to play. Burman stayed involved on the next Sarah Lawrence possession, finding Dean Furlong on the right side for a three-pointer that gave the Gryphons a two-possession lead heading into the final two minutes of play. Four straight MSMC free-throws would reduce the lead to one point once again and with 58 seconds remaining, the game was up for grabs. On the ensuing Sarah Lawrence possession, the first year guard Kim would find the team's leading scorer, Kelly, for another triple, extending the lead to four points and after a MSMC timeout with 28 seconds remaining, the Gryphons suddenly took control of the final seconds of the game. A trip to the line after a foul by Burman netted the Knights one point and made it a three-point game. Kelly would be the recipient of a late-game foul and head to the stripe for two shots, making both and extending the lead to five with 14 seconds remaining. Burman would then seal the victory with a steal on the ensuing inbound, taking his turn at the line and knocking down both shots to put the Gryphons up 77-70. With four seconds remaining the Knights connected on a hail mary from deep, reducing the lead to four points, but it would not be enough as the final buzzer would ring, declaring the Gryphons winners of two straight.
