Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Gryphons Open 2024 Season with Bryn Athyn Tri-Match

BRYN ATHYN, PENN. - The Sarah Lawrence men's volleyball team opened their season with a tri-match at Bryn Athyn College on Sunday evening, taking on the hosting Lions as well as the squad from Immaculata to round out the day. The Gryphons fell in three sets in both matches, but not without impressive performances from multiple team-members.

Top Performers
  • Nate Davis earned a double-double in each match, totaling 25 kills and 20 digs on the day
  • Aidan Roney earned three block assists as well as two service aces and eight digs
  • Jason Ciron totaled nine digs in the contest against Immaculata

How it Happened

Match 1: Sarah Lawrence vs. Bryn Athyn

The Gryphons fell behind early against the Lions, as the hosts got out to an 11-4 lead and found themselves ahead 20-13 before an SLC run headlined by multiple kills from both Davis and first-year Jackson Perhaes, three of which came off sets by Nick Fajardo. The Gryphons would reduce the lead to just one point after a Bryn Athyn error, but the Lions would take the final two points to take a one-set lead.

The Gryphons capitalized on early-set errors by the Lions in the second set, but a scoring run later would see the hosts take six of the final seven points to claim a 2-0 lead. The third set would see the Lions stay in control, but with the Gryphons within striking distance throughout the match. A couple late-set kills as well as a pair of SLC errors allowed the Lions to escape with a victory in three sets.

Match 2: Sarah Lawrence vs. Immaculata

The Gryphons played the Mighty Macs tight throughout the first set, trailing late in the set but within a scoring streak of taking the lead. A service ace to cap a three-point run would secure the first set by a score of 25-18 and the Mighty Macs would use another ace to seal the second set in similar fashion, by a score of 25-17. The third set would finish with the same 25-17 scoreline as a strong mid-set effort from Immaculata would set the team up to claim the set on an SLC service error.
