Coughlin and Anderson-Strawder Combine for 49; Gryphons Win Second Straight against SJBK

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team used a combined 49 points from Colleen Coughlin and Khailand Anderson-Strawder to propel the Gryphons over the St. Joseph's Brooklyn Bears by a score of 69-66.

Top Performers
  • Anderson-Strawder led all Gryphons in scoring with 25 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists
  • Coughlin was right behind the first year with 24 points, 10 rebounds and three steals
  • Ariana Spanopoulos scored four points while adding 10 rebounds, seven assists and a block
  • Kaila Dorch was the team's third leading scorer with 12 points in addition to nine rebounds

How it Happened

Coughlin got going early, scoring on the first possession of the game as Anderson-Strawder found the sophomore for a triple 14 seconds into the contest. The Johnson City, Tennessee native scored again from deep to make the score 6-0 and help the Gryphons get ahead early in the contest. The Bears battled back, making the game close before a last-minute jumper by Coughlin gave the Gryphons a three-point lead after the first 10 minutes of play. The Bears kept the game close in the second quarter, tying the contest twice with under two minutes left in the half on jumpers by Destiny Hurt and Grace Kennedy. With 20 seconds remaining, it seemed as if the two teams would head into the halftime intermission knotted up at 32 points apiece, but with three seconds remaining it would be Hurt to score under the hoop to give the Bears a narrow lead after 20 minutes of play.

The third quarter was another close period of play, with the hosting Bears jumping ahead by up to eight points, but a 6-0 run by the Gryphons brought them right back into the game. A Coughlin jumper with 29 seconds remaining cut the lead to just two points once again and with 10 minutes of game left to play, the Gryphons trailed 52-50. Just like the beginning of the game, Coughlin opened the fourth quarter with a triple less than a minute into play. St. Joseph's Mercedes Perez responded with a connection from deep of her own to give the Bears the lead back. The Gryphons remained within striking distance and it would be back-to-back layups by Gladys Pierre that tied the game and gave the Gryphons a two-point lead with just under five minutes remaining. Dorch and Spanopoulos both scored from the field down the stretch to maintain the lead and despite some late-game struggles from the free-throw line, the Gryphons were able to hold on for their second-straight Skyline victory.
