Miles and Diaz Score in Tightly Contested Game against NYU

YONKERS, N.Y. – The Sarah Lawrence men's soccer team endured a hard-fought 3-2 defeat against NYU on Wednesday night at Fleming Field. Despite an early lead and a game-tying penalty conversion in the second half, a pair of second-half scores by the Violets allowed them to escape Fleming Field with a non-conference victory.

Notable Performers
  • Peter Miles scored the first goal of the game for the Gryphons, finishing a loose ball in the 18th minute to give the team a 1-0 lead
  • Nikos Diaz showed his cool under pressure by converting a penalty in the 72nd minute, momentarily tying the game at 2-2 and giving Sarah Lawrence hope for a late result.
How it Happened

The match started off strong for Sarah Lawrence, with the Gryphons asserting themselves early. Their efforts paid off when Peter Miles broke the deadlock in the 18th minute, putting the hosts ahead after an unassisted strike. The Gryphons continued to push forward and pressure the NYU backline, but the Violets responded in the 32nd minute with Nathan Bennett finding the back of the net to level the score at 1-1. The remainder of the first half saw both teams battle for control, but the scoreline remained unchanged heading into halftime.

The second half saw NYU ramp up the pressure, as Terra Nagai scored in the 57th minute, assisted by Bennett, and the Violets took their first lead of the game. Sarah Lawrence, however, refused to go down without a fight. In the 72nd minute, the Gryphons were awarded a penalty, and Diaz slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to bring the game level once again. Just minutes later, Bennett struck again, this time with a header off a free kick in the 77th minute, putting NYU ahead 3-2. Despite several attempts by the Gryphons to find a late equalizer, including a last-minute shot by Nicholas Fajardo, NYU's defense held firm to secure the victory.
