Coughlin leads Gryphons Offensively to Wrap up Gryphon Invitational

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team wrapped up their weekend with a Sunday afternoon matchup against Bard College, falling to the Raptors 55-44 as struggles from the free-throw line kept the Gryphons in a deficit.

Notable Performers
  • Colleen Coughlin led the team in scoring with 16 points, connecting four times from deep
  • Gabby Hudson contributed 11 points, six rebounds and seven assists
  • Emrie Pedraza totaled five points, six rebounds and a steal for SLC

How it Happened

The Raptors got ahead early in the first quarter, but Hudson kept the Gryphons in the game, scoring six of her 11 points in the first 10 minutes of play. To open the second quarter, Coughlin connected on one of her four triples and Hudson found teammate Ariana Spanopoulos for a layup to tie the game at 15 points apiece. The Raptors would answer by taking the next seven points before another triple by Coughlin stopped their momentum. The ebbing and flowing would continue, as Bard took seven of the next eight points to extend their lead to double digits with just under two minutes to play. A 50% showing at the line for Kendall Stephens and a made jumper by Coughlin in the last minute would reduce the lead to seven as the teams headed into halftime.

The second half opened with Bard's Maggy Peyton leading the charge, scoring twice herself and assisting teammate Aislynn Dixon on a three-pointer to give the visitors a 14-point advantage. A three-point play by Kaila Dorch and a triple from Pedraza would help narrow the gap, but by the end of the period the Raptors remained ahead by double digits, positioning themselves to win Sunday's consolation contest. Coughlin connected once again from long range to open the fourth quarter, but an immediate answer by Bard from deep nullified the junior's effort. Hudson would find Pedraza for a fastbreak score with two minutes left, and that would be the team's only other made field goal of the period as the Raptors held on for an 11-point victory in Bronxville.
