Women's Basketball Crashes the Boards to Defeat Maccabees, Move to 2-1 in Skyline

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team moved to 2-1 in Skyline play after a 64-57 victory over the Yeshiva University Maccabees. The Gryphons used a +22 rebounding margin to defeat the Maccabees and move above .500 in conference play.

Notable Performers
  • Kaila Dorch led all players with 22 points and added 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season
  • Gabby Hudson flirted with a triple-double, scoring 16 points, grabbing 16 boards and distributing seven assists
  • Ariana Spanopoulos scored eight points, grabbed 14 rebounds and racked up five assists
  • Audrey Mattison scored 11 points, scoring in double-digits for the third straight game

How it Happened

The game opened with a triple by Mattison, who continued her hot stretch of play by getting the Gryphons ahead early. After trading baskets, another long-range strike by the first year gave SLC a 7-5 lead. Hudson and Dorch both worked to fend off a Yeshiva run, keeping the score close before a buzzer-beating layup by Spanopoulos brought the Gryphons within one at the end of the first period. The second quarter opened with a YU triple to extend the lead to four points. Back-to-back layups by Spanopoulos and Dorch tied the game at 20 points apiece and after a couple minutes of scoreless basketball, Dorch struck again to give the hosts the lead. A steal by Emrie Pedraza led to a fastbreak score by Mattison and a Gladys Pierre midrange jumper extended the lead to two possessions. The Maccabees would close the gap to one point, but another timely triple by Mattison gave the Gryphons some cushion and scores by Dorch and Hudson gave the hosts an eight-point lead with seconds left in the half. A final heave by YU's Shai Rahamim from three-quarters court would miraculously find its way into the net and the lead would be cut down to five as both teams headed into the intermission.

The third quarter saw the Gryphons build up their lead thanks to scores from both Dorch and Hudson, eventually giving SLC a 12-point lead with under seven to play in the quarter. The Maccabees would attempt to close the gap, but scores by Spanopoulos, Pierre and Pedraza would keep the Gryphons steadily ahead while a fastbreak score by Hudson in the final minute of play would return a 12-point lead to the Gryphons with 10 minutes left to play. The fourth quarter was a similar story, with Dorch scoring the team's first seven points of the period to keep their lead. Despite scores from the Maccabees, the Gryphons maintained a seven-point lead throughout the entire period as free throws by Pedraza, Spanopoulos and Hudson helped seal the victory.
