BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team ticked off the Sarah Lawrence Academic Classic on Friday night with a win over Bard before wrapping up the tournament on Saturday against John Jay. The Gryphons and Bloodhounds both emerged from Friday night's doubleheader as victors, but it would be the Bloodhounds who completed a spotless weekend, besting the Gryphons 61-44 as the Gryphons struggled offensively.
Notable Performers
- Lemar Fulmore Jr. made nine of ten attempts from the line, racking up 11 points to go with four rebounds and five
- Chris Dougherty totaled 12 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass, while blocking two shots for SLC
- Braden Burman scored seven points and added eight rebounds for the Gryphons
How it Happened
The Gryphons got off to a fast start, with Burman scoring on the first possession of the game before Fulmore found fellow junior
Eamon Kelly for a jumper on the team's second possession. A quick 7-0 run for the Bloodhounds would give them a three-point advantage and they would hold a lead for the remainder of the contest. The Gryphons would keep the game close until the end of the half, with Fulmore, Dougherty,
John Kairouz and Kelly all finding success. Despite closing the gap to four points with under two minutes remaining in the period, the Gryphons could not carry any momentum in to the intermission thanks to a 7-2 run by the visitors to take a 28-19 lead with 15 seconds remaining. A missed three by Dougherty in the waning seconds of the half failed to connect, but Burman was positioned under the basket to corral the miss and score right before the buzzer to send the Gryphons into the break down by seven.Â
In the second half, it was all John Jay. The Gryphons twice brought the Bloodhounds' lead down to eight points, but would get no further as the visitors managed to answer every SLC score. Kelly, Burman, Fulmore Jr. and
Dean Furlong would all score from the line and Kelly, Furlong and
Aiden Morel would all strike from deep, but with just one scoring run of more than three points, the team was unable to gain any traction.
