Kelly's Career Day Leads Gryphons over UMSV for Fourth-Straight Win

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Sophomore Eamon Kelly scored 34 points, the third-highest single-game total in program history, as the Gryphons secured their fourth straight victory, a 72-54 defeat over the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins at the Peter Jay Sharp Center.

Top Performers
  • Kelly scored a career-best 34 points in the victory, connecting on eight-of-ten shots from long range
  • Braden Burman added 13 points for the Gryphons in addition to pulling down five rebounds
  • Senior Lucas Murray scored 10 points while pulling down seven rebounds and shooting 8-for-8 from the free-throw line

How it Happened

The Gryphons and Dolphins remained close, with three different ties in the first three minutes before a UMSV triple gave the Dolphins a 7-4 lead. At that point, the Gryphons would embark on a 14-0 run thanks to eight of Kelly's game-high 34 points and scores from Burman, Murray and sophomore Dean Furlong. The Dolphins would respond with four straight points but another long-range would stop the run and a dominant defensive effort by the Gryphons through the remainder of the period helped keep the UMSV offense from staging a major comeback. Kelly continued to strike from deep and at the free-throw line along with Burman and Chris Dougherty, who both made the best of their trips to the line. Eight points in the final two-and-a-half minutes of the half from UMSV's Kevin Agyemang threatened the Gryphons, but more makes from the line and a last-minute layup by Murray from a Dougherty pass helped the visitors take an 18-point lead into the intermission.

The Gryphons maintained an 18-20 point lead throughout the first two minutes of the second half but it would be another triple from Kelly that would bring the lead to 24 and force an early-half Mount Saint Vincent timeout. The Gryphons would hold their 20-point advantage, eventually using a Burman three-pointer to get ahead 60-31 and force another timeout by the Dolphins, this time with 14:07 remaining. The home team then took the next 10 points to reduce the lead to 19 with under eight minutes to play, but two free throws by Murray were followed by five more points from Kelly to re-assert a 26-point advantage for the Gryphons. A 7-0 run by the Dolphins would close out the contest but the Gryphons would emerge with an 18-point lead for their fourth-straight win.
